Body Mass Index
31.03.2019 - By Dr Jyotsna Verma
Life with an unfit body is Full of Dullness and Problems. No need to worry.
Leave your worries to us.
The main measurement indicator used is the body mass index (BMI). It takes into account the morphology of the individual even if it can be exceptionally biased in the case of athletes with a very important muscle mass. For adults, the body mass index is equal to the mass (expressed in kilograms ) divided by the square of the person's height (in meters).
Example: 75 kg / (1.75 m )2 = 75 / (1.75 x 1.75) = 75 / 3.0625 = 24.49 (the final result has been rounded off and it is in kg / m2 , but it is common not to recall the unit)
However, the BMI shows a significant variation on a planetary scale. The BMI standard is mainly based on a European type population . This index is therefore not necessarily applicable to other types of population. Asian populations, in particular, show negative consequences of obesity on health from lower BMI than those of European populations; As a result, some Asian countries have redefined obesity: Japan has defined obesity as any body index greater than 25 , while China calls for a BMI greater than 28.
BMI is one of the tools for measuring the risk of obesity for healthcare professionals, as it allows the risk of obesity to be quickly and easily assessed for the vast majority of the population.
Its only limitation, which remains however exceptional, concerns athletes and high-level sportsmen, for whom the BMI is not relevant in the case of a significant muscle mass. For example a rugby player who measures 1.95 m and is 125 kg has a BMI of 33. According to this index, he suffers from obesity associated with an increased risk of comorbidity while he has only 12% body fat. and that his excess weight is due to his muscle, not to his adipose tissue.BMI Defined as Between 18.5 and 25 Normal Between 25 and 30 Overweight Beyond 30 Obesity From 35 to 40 Severe Obesity Beyond 40 Morbid or Massive Obesity Article Last Updated on - 29.09.2025
