The sedentary lifestyle is a risk factor for obesity: physical activity has been reduced due to the development of transport ( car , public transport , elevators, etc.), new technologies (remote controls) and the time spent in front of screens ( television , computer , tablet , smartphone, etc.) often no longer making it possible to balance the energy balance. Food abundance has not necessarily caused an increase in energy intake which would explain the obesity pandemic. Daily energy intake even tends to decrease, while remaining higher than daily energy expenditure. It is this last element which remains a factor of obesity.
However, recent studies suggest that, contrary to popular belief, that the lack of physical activity is not the key factor in the onset of obesity, that populations more those who are physically active do not expend more energy than those who are more sedentary and that sport has a low impact on body weight (in the absence of diet modification).
